Historical consciousness course (H). We study the problems and history of Indian social, economic, and political change since independence in 1947. Issues include religious and communal violence, social conflict between high and low status communities, Hindu nationalism, feminist mobilizations, failed educational policies, the effects of modernization on tribal and village communities, and the dispute with Pakistan over the state of Kashmir.
