ALGEBRAIC PROBLEM SOLVING - 81466 - GNM 2310 - 095

Associated Term: Fall 2020
Levels: Undergraduate

Atlantic City Campus Campus
Online Blended Schedule Type
Online Instructional Method

Learning Objectives: a) Learning to apply course material (to improve thinking, problem solving, and decision making) In this course, we will examine a series of situations and systems, which allow for the posing of questions. After refining the questions, we will identify suitable mathematical models (such as linear, exponential, and quadratic) to represent these situations. The ability of these models to accurately represent “real-life” systems will be examined critically. Algebraic concepts and procedures will be introduced, as they are needed in developing, selecting, and working through these mathematical models. b) Learning fundamental principles, generalizations, and theories This course is intended to build on the knowledge gained in pre-precalculus-level courses including high school algebra. We will examine fundamental principles including the laws arising from math topics such as: collecting, displaying, and organizing data rate of change; identifying functions (linear, exponential, quadratic); and working with mathematical models (linear, exponential, quadratic). c) Developing skills in expressing mathematics verbally and in writing This is a W2-designated course and is intended to provide you with practice in clearly expressing mathematics. You will be required to submit fully justified and carefully prepared written solutions to problems. You will be expected to explain math actions and thinking, clearly and coherently, in writing. You will also be required to participate in problem presentations both as a presenter and as a classroom participant.
Required Materials: Graphing calculator (E.g. TI84)
Technical Requirements: This class will have asynchronous recorded lessons, but we will meet on specified Tuesdays/ Thursdays synchronously for testing.
